Before I start this blog I want to share two verses.
Proverbs 3: 5-6 ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight’.
Luke 14:28 ‘Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?’.
I love both of these verses, because it highlights the importance of God being our guide, our leader and the ultimate planner and author of our lives. However in Luke it also makes us aware that in life we have authority to make decisions, and are we making smart decisions? Are we sitting down and assessing where our choices are taking us? Or are we simply floating through life not really planning or thinking about anything. I believe that as Christians God is our true guide and ultimately his way will be the way we go, however he does give us authority to make choices, and we could end up on a path we never meant to be on due to poor planning and not sitting down first to assess the cost of our decision. In today’s blog I want to share with you some tips on how you can make plans and start directing your life in a Godly way, which will ultimately bring fruitfulness not only to you, but also to the Kingdom.
Tip #1 – Carefully assess where you want to be and what you want your life to look like in the future
I want to share a personal example with you. Andy and I have a future vision for our family, it includes children, it includes helping people live healthy life’s and it’s about helping to grow the Kingdom. We bought the house we now live in because we want children, I started this website and my YouTube channel because I want to help people and we started planning for our future walking business because we care about good health and community. Nothing we’ve done has just happened randomly, it was all planned with a purpose in mind. No one ever stumbles into something amazing, yes there may be moments in your journey that take less work, but everything worth something will require work. So where do you want to be in 10 years, 20 years, 50 years time? What will it take to get there? It’s so important to involve God in these decisions, as the best path you can be on is his path for your life. I’d encourage you to sit down and pray and ask God ‘Where do you want me? What do I need to do to get there?’. And then, make a move! No one achieves anything by staying still.
Tip #2 – What is the cost?
Nobody wants a half build tower, or to devote hours into a project that is never finished. Every choice you make in life will require a cost, and the question to ask, is it worth the cost? and can you manage the cost?. Starting a ministry that takes you across the world is going to cost you a lot, but is that cost worth it? Committing to your marriage and choosing to grow the Kingdom by having children or adopting is going to cost you a lot, but is that cost worth it? Laying down your life for Jesus is going to cost you a lot, but is that cost worth it? Heck yes to that one!. As a Christian I know that I’m not called to an easy life, it comes with great costs, but I know when my husband and I are older and we look back on everything we accomplished for the Kingdom we will feel so thankful that we pushed through the challenges. I do want to highlight here that sometimes the cost isn’t worth it, sometimes you give and give and nothing happens, life can be like that at times, we learn and we move on. So please ask yourself again and again, what is the cost and is it worth it?
Tip #3 – Set realistic goals
I’d love to share in this blog that Andy and I have three God loving children and an established walking business that is helping many people! Maybe in 20 years that will be my story, but certainly not now. However I can say we’re preparing our hearts for what parenthood might look like, and we’re working on our marriage so it’s ready to handle the demands parenthood will bring. Life is a journey and the way we handle it is by biting of manageable pieces at a time and not taking another bite until we are ready. I remember in my single years reading books on marriage and watching sermons to get advice, I couldn’t force myself to meet someone, but what I could do at the time was try and prepare myself for marriage. I can’t get pregnant at the moment, but what I can do is pray that God prepares my heart and mind for the ups and downs that pregnancy and motherhood will bring. So I’d encourage you to set some realistic goals, now you’ve established where you’d like to be one day, what can you do now to make one step in that direction?
Tip #4 – Work hard, rest hard
Now you’ve established your direction, assessed the cost and set realistic goals on how to get there, it’s time to work hard, but also rest hard. No one builds a multi-million business sitting watching TV not doing anything, to reach your goal it will take hard work. I love my lists, I’ve actually written a to-do list for today, as I’ve got my in-laws visiting and I want to get the house ready and get some food prepared before their arrival. Sitting writing the list is helpful, but if I spend the whole day trying to write the list without actually doing anything on the list, then my day wouldn’t be productive. I see people (including myself) doing this all the time, sitting and thinking about their future without making any practical steps to get there. We are called to work hard, God only rested for one day, which means that majority of our time should be working and progressing towards our goals. However we do have to remember that rest is essential, if God needed it, then we certainly do. Every Saturday Andy and I try and take a Sabbath day where we don’t work on our side hustles, I don’t write, we don’t do anything significant, except spend time with one another, family and God. One day of rest is not going to stop you from achieving your goals, in fact it will help sustain you on the journey to you reaching your goals.
I hope you’ve found this blog helpful, in summary here are my tips:
- Establish a plan
- See if it’s worth the cost
- Set realistic steps to get there
- Get working and make sure you take time to rest
These tips are simple, but vital in achieving everything God has called you into. I’d encourage you to follow the order of the tips, as you can’t count the cost if you don’t know what you’re doing, and you can’t rest from work, when you’ve not got anything to work on. Spend time in prayer, follow these steps, continue to make the Kingdom your priority and I’m sure you will start to see fruit from your hard work.
